Jim’s newspaper report I have to say I am delighted to see that once again we had a brilliant turnout for the Shoprite League on Tuesday, this, despite that fact that it was not the best of days. There is now a leaderboard emerging and one guy who is showing up on it is third placed man, Martin Gildea, he returned a score of 39 points to keep himself in contention for the vouchers come the end of the season. All the lessons he has been getting from young Finn must be working for Ralph Trigger as once again we see him in the prizes, his score of 40 points was good enough for second, he was just beaten on the back nine by young Daniel Ash, he delivered the goods on the day and I think his is another name we will be seeing near the top when all the rounds are finished. The Herbie Kelly Rosebowl is one of our older competitions and Saturday saw the rearranged holding of it. As seems to be the norm at the moment, it was played as a medal. John Fitzsimmons decorated his card with a fine score of 65 to take third, just losing out too second placed man, Paul Bridson, he also returned a score of 65 but managed to hold on to the runners-up spot due to countback. In first place was Ryan Powlesland, his score of 64 was the best on the day and it ensured that he has got his hands on yet another trophy. I am sure he will be working on his speech making skills in time for the presentation. I know I have said this before, I think that the late Brian Moore was one of the funniest Captains we ever had at Douglas, so it was nice to see a decent turnout for the holding of the Brian Moore Cup on Sunday. It was a shame that there was a really strong wind blowing which made for some tricky conditions. One man who coped well with them was Lee Hunt, his score of 71 nett was enough to hold on to third spot, one shot better was another Ex Captain, Colin Home, but he had to settle for second as Justin Griffiths was the only man on the day to return a score under par. He recorded a score of 84-16=68 to take the cup. Stephen Skillicorn won the lowest gross with a score of 71. Next Saturday sees the first round of the Club Championship, I look forward to seeing you all there. The Grousebeater. |
