Jim Cairney Report - Douglas Golf Club Report - The Grousebeater When I do my reports, I normally have a look through the cards for the various competitions that have been held the week before, unfortunately, because of the Virus situation I am unable to do this at the moment, that is a shame, because I would have loved to have had a look at the card of the winner of last Tuesday`s Shoprite League. It is not often you get to have a look at a card with 46 points recorded on it. This incredible score was achieved by Chris Clinton, so hats off to him for that great game of golf. I bet that both Oliver Ashe, who finished third, and Martin Feely would have thought they were in with a chance of winning when they both returned a score of 41 points but it was not to be their day. The first round of the Hutchinson Cup was held on Saturday, that it was a sunny day disguised the fact that there was actually a strong wind blowing, this was reflected in the high number or non-returns on the day. In the comp itself, there was nearly 20 guys who all played to, or beat their handicap so I am sure they will all feel that they are still in with a chance next week. At the top of the leaderboard at the moment is Michael Booth with 66 nett, and Peter Knight and Scott Wilson both on 65, so with only four strokes between the top twenty it is all still to play for. The conditions on Sunday were not the best, despite that we still saw a great turn out for the Jim Skillicorn 4BBB, Robert Tate and Lawrence Geilling built a fine score of 62 nett to take third spot, in second with a total of 60 were the big guns, David Murray and John Oates, but the winners this week with a 59 was the double act of Paul Moffitt and Harry Potter, sorry, I mean John Fenlon. No doubt the guys at Ocean Ford will be reminded about it all week by John. If I can go back to the guys who came second and third in the Shoprite League, both Oliver and Martin are quite new to the game, from what I have heard they are both loving every minute of their time on the course. One good thing on their side is that they play with Gary Ashe, he is brilliant to play with and when they are not in the competitions I am sure he is giving them great advise, years ago, he gave my a simple tip to raise my right shoulder when driving and it made me hit the ball not only a much straighter but also much longer, so am sure it won't be long until we see their handicaps come tumbling down.
