Douglas Golf Club Report - The Grousebeater I think we can all agree that it is fantastic to see that things are beginning to get back to normal, not only on the Island in general, but also at the Golf Club. Last week saw the start of the Shoprite League on a Tuesday and on Monday night we had the start of the Scratch League. It was brilliant to see that our guys got off to a great start with a win against Castletown. In keeping with the good news, I am delighted to report that we have had a huge increase in new members, and what is interesting is that most of them are young guys, so this all bodes well for the future of the club. What we just need to do now is to keep them all socially distant from Peter Musson and we will have a great chance of keeping them.
The Lenny Callow Cup was the prize up for grabs on Saturday, once again we had a great turnout, there was not much to separate the top three, Scott Findlay had to settle for third with a score of 64 points, just losing out to Tony Gerrard on countback, but it was Jamie Curtis who “climbed the ladder to the roof” to take the top spot with a score of 63 points. I am sure he will be shooting from the rooftops about his victory. I think you will all agree is the fact that we have been lucky with the weather over this last three months and that it has helped us in dealing with the virus, so it was nice to see the great conditions continue on Sunday for the holding of the Rev FM Cubbon Cup. I even put on my shorts for the first time this year, being honest, I am not actually as fan of shorts, I find that when I look down to putt and see, what my other half describes as my “lillie white chicken wing legs” it tends to put me off my putting. I don`t think that Paul Cilia had any problems with his putting on Sunday as he returned a score of 42 points, this was good enough to secure third place, in second, with a score of 43 points was Ross Pullman. The winner of the Cup was Chris Wolfendale with a fantastic score of 44 points. When you consider Chris started the day on a handicap of six then you have to say the was a superb round of golf, from what I have heard, he burnt his hand on his putter after he had finished his round. I as am writing this; I have just learnt that the Pubs and Clubs have been allowed to re-open to hopefully we will get a chance to meet up and have Shandy at the weekend. I hope to see you there.
