Douglas Golf Club Report - The Grousebeater It was absolutely brilliant to drive down to the Clubhouse on Saturday to see that once again the car park was full as this could mean only one thing, and that was the fact that we were finally allowed to play proper competitions again. What was also great to see was that we had over 120 members take part in the re-scheduled Tony Allen Cup. It really did feel strange to walk out and see white markers and that added a reminder about how much harder it is to play off them as opposed to the yellows. The one person it did not seem to effect was Aaron Quinn, he played as if he had never been away and managed to return a score of 41 points to take the cup. This score was well ahead of the rest of the field, the next best score was from Martin Feeley, his total of 38 points was good enough to take second place, also on 38 points was Gary Ashe, but he lost out on countback. I have to say I did not have the best of days on my return to playing in competitions again, but at least I had an excuse, It was quite a windy day and I kept getting my hair blowing in to my eyes as I have yet to get my haircut, hopefully this will be getting rectified this week. The wind was not as strong on the following day for the holding of the L Stanley Cup. We can only assume that everybody has been missing their golf as we saw the biggest turnout I can ever remember on the Sunday. This time, things were a lot closer at the top of the leaderboard with only one point being the difference between the top four places, in third spot was Francis Hunter with 40 points, he managed that due to a better back nine than Matt Jones. It was the same scenario for the top two spots with Tony Crawley also missing out to the eventual winner Oliver Swale, both recorded a score of 41 points, but it was Oliver who took the cup with a better back nine. Over the next few weeks I will try and update everyone about what has been happening behind the scenes at the club whilst we have been in lockdown, but one great thing I can report is that we have had a large increase of new members, this all bodes well for the future. I look forward to seeing you all next week. The Grousebeater. Good golfing everyone, enjoy the read |
